Why Zoom calls need extra light

Most laptop webcams have small sensors that perform poorly in low light, producing grainy, washed-out video and unflattering shadows under the eyes and chin. The fix is more light from the front, ideally above the camera. A second screen running this tool gives you exactly that — soft, flat fill light positioned above the webcam — without buying a webcam light or ring light.

Two-device setup for better Zoom video

If you have two spare devices, run the meeting preset on the larger screen (laptop or tablet) directly above your webcam for main fill light, and the soft warm white preset on a smaller phone to your side at 30-45° for side fill that adds dimension. This two-point setup mimics professional studio lighting and dramatically improves how you look on Zoom.

Why Zoom looks worse than your mirror

Webcams are not mirrors. Most laptop webcams capture only a small fraction of the light a human eye perceives, so dimly-lit rooms that look fine in person look terrible on Zoom. Adding screen-based front fill light raises the brightness Zoom's auto-exposure has to work with, so it settles on a cleaner exposure with less noise, sharper detail and more accurate skin color.

    Position above your monitor

    Place the lighting device just above your webcam. This puts the light source where natural daylight from a window would be — slightly above eye level — which is the most flattering angle.

    Set device brightness to maximum

    Your device's hardware brightness slider controls actual lumen output. Set it to 100% then use the tool to control color.

Q.01 Will this work for Zoom on my Mac, PC or phone?
Yes. The tool works in any browser on any device — Mac, PC, iPad, Android tablet, iPhone, Android phone. The only requirement is that you have a spare screen to use as the light source while Zoom runs on your main device. A second monitor, an old phone or a tablet all work.
Q.02 What color temperature is best for Zoom?
4000-4500K is the sweet spot for Zoom — warm enough to keep flattering skin tones, cool enough to look professional. The meeting preset uses 4200K. Avoid pure 6500K daylight (looks clinical) and warm 3000K (makes you look orange) for normal business calls.
Q.03 How bright should the light be for Zoom?
Set your device's hardware brightness to 100%. Then use the tool's brightness slider at 60-80% for normal indoor lighting, or 90-100% if your room is dim. The goal is for the light to be the brightest source on your face, brighter than overhead room lighting or window light from the side.
Q.04 Can I use this with Zoom's built-in lighting filters?
Yes — they are complementary. Zoom's 'Adjust for low light' setting is a software brightness boost that adds noise. Adding real light from a screen fixes the underlying problem (not enough actual light), so Zoom's auto-exposure does not need to crank up gain. You can leave Zoom's setting on or off; the screen light works either way.
