Why 4000K is the most-used color temperature

Walk into any modern office, kitchen, supermarket or bathroom and the overhead lighting is almost certainly 3500-4100K. This range is the lighting industry's default because it looks 'just white' to most people — warm enough to feel comfortable, cool enough to keep you alert. When you use a 4000K screen light, you are matching the visual environment people already associate with everyday tasks, which is why it works so well for video calls (you look like you are at the office, not in a candle-lit den).

Color temperature measures how warm or cool a light source appears, in degrees Kelvin (K). Candle flame is around 1900K. Sunset and golden hour sit around 3000-3500K. Tungsten incandescent bulbs are 2700K. Office fluorescents and LED panels are typically 3500-4200K. Pure white sits around 4500-5000K. Midday sun and standard daylight reference (D65) is 6500K.
