Warm light (1900K – 3500K)

Warm light contains more red-orange wavelengths and less blue. Candle flame sits at 1900K. Sunset and tungsten incandescent bulbs are 2700K. Halogen bulbs are 3000K. Daylight white (5000K – 6500K)

Daylight white is the standard for color-critical work. 5000K (D50) is the print and graphic-arts standard — used in print shops worldwide. 5500K is approximate noon sun. 6500K (D65) is the display calibration standard, used for monitor calibration and digital photography. Best uses: product photography, paint matching, fabric color, print proofing, art workstations, SAD light therapy. Tools: 5000K daylight (D50), 6500K daylight (D65), product light, streaming light.

Cool daylight and shade (6500K – 10000K)

Above 6500K, light reads as crisp blue-white. 7500K is overcast daylight. 8000-10000K is the deep blue cast of shadow on a clear day. These cool temperatures are uncommon for indoor lighting but appear naturally in outdoor photography and shadow areas. Best uses: simulating outdoor shade for portraits, dramatic cool studio lighting, blue-hour mood photography. Tools: blue screen (deep cool), white screen at maximum brightness.

How to read a Kelvin chart

Read left-to-right as warm-to-cool. Lower Kelvin numbers are warmer (more red-orange). Higher Kelvin numbers are cooler (more blue-white). The scale is named after the Kelvin temperature unit because it describes the color a 'black body' (a theoretical perfect emitter) would glow when heated to that temperature. A 2700K incandescent bulb glows the same color as iron heated to 2700K. This is why warm bulbs have low Kelvin numbers — physical heat starts orange-red before reaching white-hot.

Why color temperature matters for screen lighting

Your screen's color temperature directly affects how subjects look on camera, how colors appear in photos, how your eyes feel after long sessions, and whether the light disrupts sleep. Q.05 Are higher Kelvin values brighter?
No — Kelvin measures color, not brightness. A 6500K bulb and a 3000K bulb can have the same brightness; they only differ in color tint. Brightness (luminous output) is measured separately in lumens. A common confusion: cool 6500K light feels 'brighter' subjectively because it activates the eye's blue-sensitive receptors more, but the actual photon output may be identical to a warmer bulb.
