No. 001 · NEW YEAR COUNTDOWN

New Year countdown — the clock to midnight, for the whole room

  • 01 Midnight in your time zone
  • 02 One giant digit for the last 10 seconds
  • 03 Optional chime at zero

Counts down to midnight on 1 January in your own time zone. In the last ten seconds the display switches to one huge digit so everyone can count along, then the lights flash and an optional chime marks the new year.

Built for counting along

A New Year countdown is read by a crowd, often from the far side of a room, so the last ten seconds drop the days and minutes and show a single numeral filling the screen. Everyone can shout along with the same number at the same moment.

§ 02

Television broadcasts and some online clocks count to midnight somewhere else.

Your own midnight

Television broadcasts and some online clocks count to midnight somewhere else. This page uses the clock on the device it is running on, so it hits zero at your local midnight. If you are hosting a call across time zones, open it on each side and every screen will strike twelve on its own schedule.

On New Year's Day

After midnight the page shows Happy New Year for the rest of 1 January, then starts counting to the following New Year on the 2nd.

Inquiries

Questions worth asking

Q.01 Is the countdown accurate to the second?
It is as accurate as the device's own clock, which phones and computers set automatically from the network. Check the seconds against your phone; they should match.
Q.02 Whose midnight does it count to?
Yours. The countdown reads the clock and time zone of the device it is open on, so a screen in London and one in Sydney each hit zero at their own local midnight. The time zone in use is shown under the controls.
Q.03 Can I put it on a TV?
Yes. Open the page in the TV's browser, or on a laptop connected by HDMI or screen casting, and press Fullscreen. On browsers that support it the page also asks the screen to stay on while it is fullscreen.
Q.04 What does the preview button do?
It runs the last ten seconds and the celebration straight away, so you can check the picture and the chime on your TV before the real moment. The real countdown carries on in the background and the page returns to it afterwards.
